Thanks Mrs.Haselman

Yes, another slide show of cheerleaders.

Mrs.Haselman let us invade her home for hours, use all of her baking ingredients to make what you see in the pictures and more, make a mess, be loud, and she fed us lasagna...her generosity, love, and support blesses us greatly. Thank you so much for everything! You are such an example to me of how hospitality can be used to share God's love on others.

The cheerleaders are working hard to raise money to pay for their charlatans uniforms. In these pictures they were baking for our school's Fall Festival. The previous charlatans photos were of the girls preparing for Cheer Camp.

They are working hard...Who says work can't be fun.

The hearts on the slide show just make it seem more Korean to me...I thought it appropriate.

School Picnic

Each year, our school has a school picnic. It's much as it would be in the States. Everyone brings food. We all eat. The kids run around the park. A mixture of adults an children throw a football or play some volleyball or just visit with each other. I almost did not blog this since this happened about a month ago...but since I don't often take pictures of those I work with...I figure this will be a great way for you to get to "meet" my co-laborers.

I wasn't going to do a slideshow...but then blogger was not wanting to be nice...so slide.com won.

For the Record

Just so you know....I sucessfully made Idiot bread this past Friday!

Someone, when they saw the bread "rising" (in quotes because it hardly rose), they asked me why I keep trying. That person obviously does not know me well!

Never give up. A few failed attempts will not keep me from experiencing sucess. After all, isn't sucess really just learning from our failure and trying again?

Anyway, I was happy to conquer Idiot bread.

Bread of Second Changes

As many of you know, I am part of a fellowship called the Hospitality House. I promise to blog on just the House in the next week or so since I have never done this.

Anyway, I cook most Friday nights for the House. This past Friday, I made some beef stroganof and Idiot bread. Idiot bread has the name Idiot bread because it is so easy to make that an idiot can make it.

Well, I have tried to make it one other time and was not totally sucessful. It basically never rose like is was suppose to and it was too brown on the bottom.

So I figured I would make it this past Friday...determined to be sucessful...I mean, I should be able to sucessfully make Idiot bread...I like to think of myself as a pretty smart girl.

Anyway, this past Friday...attempt two. It was going so good. I made a larger recipe this time since last time it barely covered the bottom of the pan. The dough is suppose to rise for about an hour. After about 20 minutes, it had already risen so that it was to the top of the pan. So I go over and sort of punch the air out of it to make it smaller (not that I was suppose to...it was just getting a bit too large). After it rises you are suppose to pour about 2 cups of melted butter on the top. Hence the concern for how high it was rising. I needed to be able to pour butter on the top!

The hour is up. The bread has risen to the top of the pan. So I punch it down again, pour the melted butter on top and place it in the oven.

Obviously I don't make bread often. I figured it was done rising. Not true. It has been in the oven 5-10 minutes when smoke is just coming out from the oven. I quickly open to oven to find flames. I turn of the gas and the flames go out. The bread had risen some more so that two cups of melted butter has basically spilled to the bottom of the oven creating the fuel for the fire. Good times.

I am not daunted by this. I debate if I should give up or keep baking this bread. Well I decide to stick another pan under the bread to catch any butter that spills over and I turn the oven back on to finish the baking process. I keep an eye on it at first. Things look good. No fire. I am a genius!

Not really. The smoking oven happens again. So I open the oven door and turn of the gas. Only this time the flames (and large ones) keep burning. So we discuss what to do. At this time I inform those around me that salt kills flames. Rather than just grab the salt to put the fire out...I talk about how it puts flames out almost instantly. Well it does not take me long to actually grab the salt and attempt to throw it on the flames. Someone else has grabbed the fire extinguisher. Brice took over and started throwing salt on the flames. He finally got the flames out. By this time the House is filled with black smoke and people's eyes are burning. We opened all the windows and door...but it was smokey for a very long time.

Anyhow...back to the bread...yeah I did not think to take a picture of the flaming oven...but here is the "after" shot. Notice the nice black layer on top of the dough.

You would think that after this point I would throw in the towel and forget about the bread. But no...I had not given up yet! I take half of the dough and transfer it to a new pan. I only filled it half full of dough so that it could rise if it wanted to. I figured it had pleny of room to rise since it had already risen so much. I melt more butter to pour on the top and place it back in our now clean oven.

And yes...it did cook without any flames. I did get concerned at one point because the bread did rise so that is the butter almost spilled over again. The end result is that yes, we did get to enjoy some delicious Idiot bread (though it did have a slightly smokey flavor).

I call the the bread of second changes...because though it had seemed like I should give up on it...I kept at it. And the end result was good! Others agree. The entire pan of Idiot bread did get eaten.

Is there a lesson in all of this? Of course. We are much like the bread of second chances. Though we may face trials (flaming ovens) in our lives...God never gives up on us. He will keep putting us in the oven until He has the end result He desires. Yes, this not a totally great analogy that breaks down in many areas...but this incident does remind me that God does not give up on us. He gives us second chances...and third..and fourth when needed.

On a side note...I am not an Idiot...I am just too smart for Idiot bread. I will try again and hopefully be able to make it without the flames. I totally love how my identity is not based on my ability to make Idiot bread. I was able to laugh this off and move on. My night was not ruined. My reputation as a cook...maybe...but my identiy is still in place and I still like to think that I can make a pretty decent meal. By the way...the Beef Stroganof and even the green beans (I tried an experiment--I made vegetables to see if anyone would eat them) were a sucess. Nearly all of the green beans disappeared!

Thanks for endruing through this ramble about my cooknig adventures!

One man's junk is another man's treasure.

This past Monday we had parent/teacher conference from noon until about 7:30 p.m. Have left for school at 6:30 that morning that and not returning until about 8:30 p.m. is a long day. My roommate and I were looking forward to sinking into the couch and recovering from our day.

That was our plan...but is not what happened. We returned home to an appartment that had been broken in to. The saying is true...one man's junk is another man's treasure. Though all of stuff had been gone through...literally every drawn in our appartment had been rummaged through, nothing was taken. The police's explanation was that we had nothing valuable.

Praise the Lord absolutely nothing is missing from our appartment. Though the police said they were professionals based on the way the completely removed the lock from our door, I still don't think the explanation that we have nothing valuale explains why the theif did not take the hundred and some odd dollars from Pam's room or the nearly one thousand dollars that I had in a clear file on my bed. I completely believe that God had to have sheilded this from their eyes. They had moved the clear file on my bed where you could obviously tell there was money inside (I had just collected over a hundred dollars from each of my eight cheerleaders, plus I had all the money we had collected from our Cheer Camp fundraiser). Professional or not...they passed by about $1200 of cash that they could have easily slipped into their pockets.

So this post is just to PRAISE the LORD for His protection. He kept us safe and guarded our money.

Cheerleading Sleepover

Though we were missing two of the girls on the team...we had some fun as we prepared for our Cheer Camp the next morning.

Happy 25th Kara

I am a firm believer that all birthdays need celebrated—and your 25th definitely needs to be celebrated and well documented with lots of photos. Last weekend was my best friend’s birthday. She is now a quarter of a century old and below is a photo documentation of our day.

Alright…the day started for Kara with church at MBC. I meet up with her after church and this is us posing for picture as we are walking to the bus stop. For those who have are familiar with Songtan…we are under the bridge that leads to the church or in our case, up the bridge.

Alright…what this picture does not capture is our mad-dash run to this bus stop to catch the Number 2 bus. As we rounded the corner at the bridge to main gate…we saw it sitting at the light…so we ran.
I told Kara that all the rain was God releasing all of His tears of joy over her in celebration of her life.

Us riding on the bus. We, or rather I, decided that we needed to get out of Songtan and go to Pyongtaek to enjoy Pizza and the ever-popular sticky pictures!

For those of you who have never been to our neck of the woods…the Number 2 bus will take you from Songtan to Pyongtaek and drop you off across the street from Pizza Hut!

Now…to let you in on some of the ways that Korea has changed the way I eat pizza!

First…Which would you choose to put on your pizza?

Notice my choice…I know look for the Tabasco sauce for my pizza…I only settle for Parmesan cheese if there is not Tabasco…try it next time you eat pizza…maybe you will be the next convert!

Oh...and if you really want to complete the Korean pizza eating experience...then eat sweet pickles. Not necessariy on the pizza, but before, after, or during.

You have love this picture of Kara!—I have a knack for photography…huh?

Anyway…the other thing that has changed about the pizza eating experience is captured in this picture…can you guess what it is?

After pizza…sticky pictures! It is down the street a tiny way from Pizza Hut. This is the outside of the store…

And the inside of the store...basically you choose some wacky hair and some props before going inside a photo booth and having some fun.

And the reults...

So these pictures were not from Kara's birthday...but I don't have those scanned and these at least give you an idea about the whole sticky picture experience...but just an idea for the end result does not even begin to capture the experience.

Unfortunately…we both really NEEDED to do some lesson planning. So we did spend a couple of hours up at the school doing work. This is me waiting for the Number 80 bus to come and whisk us away from school to the luxuries of enjoying the indoors on a rainy day!

Kara’s birthday dinner…I forgot I had the bandana on my head…and oh what a lovely tablecloth! I hope you did not miss the great amount of sarcasm contained in that statement!

After dinner, we watch one of the movies Kara’s parents had sent her for her birthday…some movie about some dog is Antarctica. We paused the movie so that Kara could blow out 25 candles after we quickly sang her Happy Birthday. I stuck her candles into her plate full of Snickerdoodles—her favorite cookie. This picture does not even begin to capture Kara’s patheticness. It took her at least five blows to get those blown out. Nicole and I finally had pity on her and blew out rest. I am a firm believer in blowing out one candle for each year that you have lived. Kara…you have a year.

Well...that is all folks. Overall we had a fun time. I hope you enjoyed celebrating Kara's 25th birthday with me.

Meet my Students

Well...I had someone request some pictures of my kiddos...so Carol these are for you. The day I took the pictures, my first class, Algebra 1, was taking a test so I don't really have a "class" picture of them. I did take two of them taking the test--nothing too exciting.

Consumer Math...I don't know if we ever did get a good photo.

These are my kids...I love them very much...and they are the reason I do what I do.

Oh...requests are great! They help me know what YOU want to see. When it is your life you are posting about...sometimes it is hard to know what to post. Or I forget that I have not shared pictures of certain things. Please just leave suggestions for future posts!

Enjoy

Testing

Before I bother creating a post...I figured I should see if blogger is even going to allow me to post!
