Thailand Journals: Day 4

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

Today when we showed up to work, the Thai workers put us all to work and were ready to go at 8:00 a.m. when we arrived. Monday was spent, I believe, proving we could do the task. We got a lot of the wall up yesterday, but we got a ton done today. My words are so descriptive! I think we worked until about 12:30 or 1:00 before stopping for lunch. After taking an hour for lunch, we go busy and worked until 4:30. It’s hard to explain all we did…but there were lots of different things going on at once. The Thai workers pointed and demonstrated…and we obeyed. It works…you do not need common language to communicate when you have gestures!

After working, we returned to hour hotel for a shower and change of clothes. For dinner we went to Chiang Mai Cultural Center where we ate dinner and enjoyed two different shows that had a lot of the traditional Thai dances. Thai dances are actually a little boring…but I did enjoy their beautiful clothing. Their music sounds like they are tuning their instruments. There were a few highlights, including children jumping between bamboo poles and the “lama dance” was great!

Chiang Mai is about an hour or so from Mae Tang, so we got home late, and by the time we had completed our devotions, we crashed into our hard beds around 11:00 p.m. Then end of another great day!

We got the most work accomplished today. We worked from 9:00 until 4:30. On my breaks I would go around and take pictures of people doing their various tasks. Though I got a lot of them photographed...there are so many more I missed!

I included this picture because one of the things we did was clean up around the part of the wall that is mostly done. We gathered all that trash and bush to create burn pile you see. Also, severel people worked very hard to get it so that it does look that clean around the wall.Team work to get the bricks laid. Everyone had a specific job.

Dakota, I believe, was on cement duty most of the day--my arms are tired just thinking about it!
The girls moving the support pieces so that the Thai workers can get it ready to pour the cement for the posts.
Stone and Michael did this tedious tasks for at least half a day...if not longer. They are making the framework for the beam that will go across the top of the wall.
Julia and Beka pounding cement off some beams...they enjoyed this task!
Amy made sure the dogs got lots of love everytime she took her break. These two dogs were here last year. And Danica is doing her normal thing during break, looking at the picture on my camera, or anyone's camera.
Mr.C taking a break...though the kids would say he didn't work...he had the job of supervising the 2o different things that were going on at once. And he did do a lot to contribute toward the work on the pavers that we did in front of the missionaries house. I have not shown pictures of that yet.

Gotta love Danica!

No words are needed!

One of the best parts of each day was our mid-morning snack of fresh fruit!

Yes, I did actually get a few pictures of myself...however Danica has quite a few...intersting... shots of me. She has a nack for catching you at the most interesting moments. Shall I say interesting one more time?

Unloading the bricks and pavers for our "other job".

Pouring the cement for the posts.

I could actually keep posting a whole lot more pictures...but this is getting long and it is getting late. So that is all for Day 3. Oh...I will post three more pictures from our dinner at the Chaing Mai Cultural Center. It was a full day...but good.

Michael sleeping in the back of the truck on the way back to the hotel, while others were...

Acting out the Titanic scene. Always an adventure!
